North Eleuthera Airport

Is North Eleuthera International Airport expanding?

Some exciting news for both Harbour Island travel guide readers and North Eleuthera locals and visitors—North Eleuthera International Airport is officially under construction, with work already underway as of May 2025. Temporary repair efforts have started on the existing terminal, including roof restoration, expanded check-in and arrival areas, new restroom facilities, full air conditioning, and mold remediation. These upgrades are designed to enhance the travel experience ahead of the broader Eleuthera Airport Expansion project.

The major construction phase is part of a $55 million redevelopment initiative originally funded through a loan agreement with the Saudi Fund for Development. However, due to funding delays, the Bahamian government has secured alternative financing via the Plenary International Fund to move forward. The project is expected to break ground in mid-2025, with completion projected by mid-2026. Once finished, the new terminal will more than double the airport’s annual capacity—from 300,000 to 700,000 passengers—and generate over 300 new direct jobs in the region.

This transformation marks a significant improvement for the entire North Eleuthera region and will undoubtedly elevate the experience for travelers featured in any Harbour Island travel guide. With the Eleuthera Airport Expansion underway, easier and more efficient access to one of the Bahamas' most beloved destinations is just around the corner.
