For years, travelers heading to the pristine shores of Harbour Island relied on two main carriers from South Florida: American Airlines and Silver Airways. Silver Airways operated daily flights to North Eleuthera, serving as a vital link for tourists and residents alike.
However, the airline struggled with reliability issues, frequently leaving passengers frustrated with delays and service disruptions. In March 2025, these problems escalated as Silver began experiencing severe operational difficulties.
By June 2025, the airline ceased all operations permanently and without warning, leaving travelers stranded and creating a significant gap in service to the island.
The sudden collapse of Silver Airways sent ripples through the Harbour Island and Eleuthera communities. While smaller operators like Aztec Airways and Tradewind Aviation stepped in to offer limited service, the loss of daily flights made travel to the island both more challenging and considerably more expensive. Hotel owners, restaurant operators, and tourism businesses worried about the impact on visitor numbers during the critical winter season.
Bahamas Air emerged as the natural solution to fill this void. On November 23, 2025, the national carrier launched its new nonstop service between Fort Lauderdale and North Eleuthera, bringing renewed hope to the island’s tourism industry.
The airline began operations with two flights per week on Wednesdays and Sundays, with plans to expand service by January 2026. Operating modern ATR aircraft that carry between 50 and 70 passengers, Bahamas Air offers round-trip fares starting at just $316, making the journey to paradise more accessible than ever.
As of December 31, 2025, the airline continues to operate twice weekly while preparing for expanded operations in the coming months.
Once you land at North Eleuthera Airport, reaching Harbour Island takes just minutes. A quick three-minute taxi ride brings you to the dock, followed by a scenic five-minute water taxi across the crystal-clear waters to the island.
